Guide to Coronary Angiography at Bilal Hospital

Coronary heart disease is the disease of coronary arteries. Like branches of a tree, these arteries are apread over the surface of your heart. Their job is to supply oxygen rich blood and vital nutrients to your entire heart muscle. Your heart needs all of this to perform its routine functions.

When these arteries become narrow, you feel sick and experience the symptoms of coronary heart disease. This happens because somewhere inside your coronary arteries, fatty deposits may have build up. Your heart does not receive the required amount of blood especially when you are exercising, running up and down the stairs or whenever you are physically active.

What are the symptoms of Coronary Heart Disease?
  1. Chest pain (angina) / Heart Attack
  2. Epigastric pain ( pain beneath your ribs after meals)
  3. Shortness of breath
  4. Dizziness or light headedness
  5. Sweatiness
What is Coronary Angiography and why do i need it?

It is test to diagnose heart disease. There may be something wrong with your coronary arteries.

A Coronary Angiography is also known as Cardiac Catheterization. This test uses dye and fluroscope ( similar to an X-ray machine) to look inside your coronary arteries. Its purpose is to detect heart problems.

Your doctor suspects that somewhere inside your coronary arteries, fatty deposits may have buildup. This disease is commonly known as coronary heart disease and it reduces flow of blood to heart. To pinpoint the exact location of blockage or narrowing inside your coronary arteries, Coronary Angiography is performed. It helps your doctor plan the most suitable treatment plan for you.

Can i eat or drink before the test?

Please donot eat and drink anything, for about 4 hours before the test.

What happens during a Coronary Angiography?

Your test will be performed at Bilal Hospital Cath Lab. During the test:

  • To numb the wrist or groin area, you will be given local anaesthesia before the test.
  • A thin, flexible tube (catheter) will be inserted into an artery located in your wrist or groin area.
  • The catheter will be guided to your heart.
  • Once the Catheter is in place, special dye called contrast is injected through the catheter. This reveals your coronary arteries along with any narrowed or blocked area on the monitor screens. All these mentioned details, appearing on the monitor screen are recorded in real time. A video copy of your angiogram is given to you after the test.

What long will the test take?

It may take 15 - 30 mins or more.

Will i feel pain during the test?

You will not feel pain when catheter is guided to your heart. Some of you may feel that your heart is beating hard, too fast or skipping a beat but don't worry, this is normal. You are linked to a heart monitor that records your heart rate and rhythm. If you feel uncomfortable or have pain during the test please tell your doctor or nurse right away. Don't wait.

What happens after the test?

Once your test is complete, the catheter will be removed and your doctor or nurse will press on your puncture site. This allows a seal to form over it.

When can i go home?

If your puncture site is at wrist , you can easily go home after 1-2 hours after the test. But if is at groin, you may have to stay at hospital for up to 6 hours to allow the puncture site to heal properly.

Does it have any side effects?

Coronary angiography is a safe test that is routinely performed to detect heart problems. But in case you have any doubts about it, please discuss it with your doctor before agreeing to have the test.
